My understanding is that this is unprecedented in the history of the entire State University of New York system. This demonstrates that I quickly gained the confidence of my peers, who believed in me and my ability to run the large Faculty Governance Organization. As Faculty Senate Chair, I oversaw thirteen Standing and Affiliated Committees and three Ad Hoc Committees. I instituted the three Ad Hoc Committees including one on Advisement, one on Strategic Planning, and one charged with exploring the idea of a Teaching Excellence Center for Professional Development. I also began a standing committee on General Education and Assessment. It started out as an Ad Hoc Committee, but I quickly realized that this needed to be a permanent commitment. I therefor placed the Committee's elevation to a standing committee on the agenda. Despite the fact that this requires an amendment of our Faculty Senate Constitution, I was able to make the importance of this issue clear enough that its elevation to a Standing Committee was easily passed. Due to my recruitment efforts in the first two months of my Chairship twenty-two new committee members from faculty and professional staff stepped forward to volunteer to serve in the Faculty Senate, and in the first five months, there were well over 30.
